Some Background about Rebecca Sandoval and Why She Should be Re-Elected to the Twin Rivers USD Board

with one comment

Picture of Trustee SandovalPrevious to coming to Heald College Online, I was with Twin Rivers Unified School District for many years. And, in my time with the district, I became, in many ways, the unofficial spokesperson to the Board for the Adult School.  Thus, I have gotten to know most of the board members, and I think I can honestly and accurately share about each of their strengths and problems.

Of all the Twin Rivers board members, the one who has impressed me most is Rebecca Sandoval.  She is a person who lives her convictions.  When she first got elected to the board, she told me that she would work to “give the Adult School Programs the resources and attention it deserves.”  I honestly didn’t believe her at the time, as we had many politicians make empty promises to us. But I was wrong.  She has supported the adult school students and teachers continually, even when it wasn’t popular, just as she has done the same for all the students of Twin Rivers.

This has been her record: to look carefully at the issues, determine what is the right thing to do, and then do it, despite what direction the political wind at the time is blowing.

I will be sharing more in future blog postings about Trustee Sandoval, along with some of my thoughts on the other candidates who are running in the upcoming Twin Rivers Board Election.

Thought of the Day: Thoughts are more Important than Quotes

with one comment

While we should attempt to be accurate and give credit where credit is due, in the end, a quote is just a snippet of thought, and it is the underlying thought that is truly important, regardless of who said it first, or who said it at all.

Starting a Wii Fit U Gym Community for Self-Quantifiers

without comments

Picture of the Wii Fit U Logo. Trademark NintendoI am starting a Wii Fit U Gym Community for Self-Quantifiers.  If you haven’t heard of self-quantifiers, we are the nerds who are turning to data science to better understand and improve ourselves.

If you consider yourself a self-quantifier or you are interested in learning more about how to use your own personal data to improve your life, and you use Wii Fit U, then join the Gym Community of 3860-5437-8421.

If you would like to find out more about self-quantifying and how it might be able to help your life, check out the Quantified Self, watch this piece from the PBS News Hour, or this TED Talk, and/or listen to this NPR clip from On the Media.

Also, if you are a self-quantifier, and want to know how accurate Wii Fit U can be, I would recommend seeing this Wii Fit U Direct video from Nintendo, which talks about the Fit Meter.  I also suggest reading this academic journal article about the Wii Balance Board.  Although, I have concerns over the accuracy of the calorie counter inside the game (especially for running), it looks like the Fit Meter is better.  (I hope someone does a comparison between it and other meters, such at the Fit Bit, etc. in the future)

Thought of the Day: “A monopoly and a dictatorship can end up being quite the same…”

without comments

A monopoly and a dictatorship can end up being quite the same, with concentrated power that doesn’t actually care about the needs of the people.  Yet, the debate over whether it is better for governments or private companies to run major programs, such as healthcare, often forgets this fact.
