Quote of the Day: “Any piece of knowledge I acquire today has a value at this moment exactly proportional to my skill to deal with it. Tomorrow, when I know more, I recall that piece of knowledge and use it better.”

Any piece of knowledge I acquire today has a value at this moment exactly proportional to my skill to deal with it. Tomorrow, when I know more, I recall that piece of knowledge and use it better.

This quote is attributed to Mark Van Doren, which I found when I was reading an article on Forbes’ website. I could not verify the authenticity of the quote, although it was referenced by Forbes in 1979, but it only has been cited in a handful of books.

Re-entering the World of Social Media

without comments

Around 1989 I first entered the world of electronic social media…  Although at the time it wasn’t called that, and it was mostly the nerds of the world that were connected.  It was the age of the BBS (Bulletin Board System), and I had received a 2400 baud modem (0.0024 Mbps) as a gift.  But it had many features of the social media of today, including posting of public messages (although generally in forums), private emails, and games (called doors).

I can pinpoint that event of entering the proto-world of social media that led me to where I am now.  It was from meeting several good friends on the BBS systems, that would lead me to meeting most of my other friends.   It was from becoming a young computer nerd, that would lead me to my career first as a technician, then to becoming a teacher of technology, and from there to where I am with my work to improve education in general.   It was even from these early experiences that probably helped lead me to OKCupid which helped me to meet my wife.

And while I just got a Facebook account yesterday, I never really left the social media world.  I just had gone on sabbatical for a while. 🙂
