Quote of the Day: “I realized, if I hated them when I got outside that gate, I would still be their prisoner.”

without comments

I realized, if I hated them when I got outside that gate, I would still be their prisoner.

This quote is from Nelson Mandela as retold by former President Bill Clinton, in an interview on NPR, where President Clinton said the following:

Mandella really taught me why in practical terms, hatred was a dead-bang loser.  We had a talk about that. I said ‘Now, I know that you later invited your jailers to your inauguration.  You even put the people who put you in prison in your cabinet.  But didn’t you hate them again?’ He said, ‘briefly I did. But,’ he said, ‘I realized if I hated them when I got outside that gate, I would still be their prisoner.’

While I know the news has dwelled quite a bit on Nelson Mandela recently, I think it is for good reason.  Even when he was a freedom fighter, he didn’t hurt people, as he found a way to fight without killing.  So this week, in memory of this great man, I will be sharing Mandela-related quotes.
